Following the huge success of our map reading courses earlier this year, Martin James, Leicestershire and Rutland Ramblers area footpath secretary, is running a new set of courses in the new year, comprosing both theory and practical elements.

Map reading
The course will be composed of two Zoom sessions and a practical session, which cover:
- Different types of maps
- Grid references
- Contours
- How to orientate a map and other practical tips
- Planning a walk
The dates for the next course are:
- Sunday 9th January 2022 Theory (Zoom) 19:00
- Sunday 16th January 2022 Theory (Zoom) 19:00
- Sunday 23rd January 2022 Practical Daytime (other practical sessions can be arranged).

Navigation
We are just starting to arrange navigation training for those that have completed the map reading course. The navigation course will be composed of a Zoom session and a practical session and will cover:
- The compass
- Bearings and Magnetic bearings
- Walking on a bearing
- Resection (locating your position, also known as triangulation)
- Pacing and timing
- Techniques to make thing easier
